Where I live, the population has been on the downtick for decades, as people drift off to warmer climes.
Maybe that’s why, at the one hoity-toity anchor store in the queen bee mall, the shoe department gives every impression …
… of an Ugg bomb having gone off, instead of stirring the soul with creations like these cobalt Alexander McQueens.

It’s tragic. This store doesn’t understand that the recesses of a woman’s soul will never be filled by Uggs. Or that kind of like the Met, they have a curator’s duty to bring sublime stilettos and wondrous wedges to the masses. Really, they do.
But you know who does understand all this, and so much more? Guess. That’s right. That LOO-BOO-TAWN guy.
Barely a whisper in 2004, here’s a man who’s since inspired a manicure, a Barbie doll, and a macaron by (who else?) Ladurée, not to mention capturing the hearts and wallets of the world’s best-heeled women. Yes, even Mrs. Carrie Bradshaw-Big. Sorry, Manolo. Sorry, Jimmy Choo.

He’s a legend, not only for his affability and quick quips (”hmm, I think my shoes have been driving up the price for couture shoes in general … eh, I’m fine with that”), but for things like missing his flight back to Paris so he can sign his signature red soles for the clamoring crowds at Barney’s, Saks, Bergdorf’s.
Have women … brides in particular … ever been this wild to slip on a piece of “sculpture for the feet,” as Oprah raved repeatedly to millions of viewers? Doesn’t a pair of these hand-made confections — “My inspiration really comes from the showgirls,” said Louboutin — really open up a whole new dimension on top of an already glorious wedding day?
Not only does Louboutin rule the Luxury Brand Status Index yet again, he’s one of the few designers to flat turn down a diffusion line, even though H&M came a courtin’.
In short — he’s a compact, adorable fashion deity. And clearly, he’s having plenty of fun just as things are. And as a result, so are we, from top to tootsies.

You haven’t yet watched Net-a-Porter’s interview with this pharaoh of footwear? Seriously, you won’t regret paying out this five minutes of your life … except that you just might fall even harder for you-know-you by the end.
Buh-buh buh-bum. Right then. See you in line at Saks.
