Those Fabulous Fleurs de Lis

by admin on November 7, 2008

Fleur de lis are romantic. And classic. Symbols of French aristocracy and might from way back, they also hail closer to home for many southerners (bonjour, Louisiana and Louisville, KY!).

Used judiciously, they have a way of polishing up even uber-glam events. (Maybe you remember Kathryn Heigl’s diamond fleur de lis earrings on her wedding day.) They look gorgeous in white-on-white embroidered fondant, but they also stand up to the most OTT gold-lustred monster cakes.

For a southern, Provence style take, mix your fleur de lis motifs with pink satin fans, and glassine envelopes filled with french lavender.

Or, love a little fleur de lis with black & white damask stationery and linens. Pair with a chandelier theme for a whiff of high gothic, or combine with dripping-with-crystal trees. This symbol just loves to play dress-up.

Other likely touches: FDL napkin folds, votives wrapped in FDL patterned paper, and of course, a beautifully-made FDL cake topper filled with creamy roses.
