In Praise of Crumb-Catchers

by admin on October 28, 2008

Not so long ago, you’d be forgiven for thinking the bridal gown was boring — Vera Wang certainly thought so. In military lingo? The fashion equivalent of an MRE (ready-to-eat meal ration).

Thank God, the year of the bodice has brought us back from the brink. Now you see more originality and charm. Like petal necklines and pleated fans, and cowl backs that escaped the “destination” sub-genre. Asymmetrical draping, and shameless organza roses at the base of the throat. Lovely.

But my favorite trend this year is the crumb-catcher. No other look so perfectly captures that Antoinette elegance we’ve all gone gaga for. If you’ve browsed the blogs or the runways, you’ve seen plenty of these commanding bodices on model brides. But more fascinating is the crumb-catcher’s quick jog left into bridesmaid attire.

Aren’t these bridesmaids especially darling? The neckline elevates the gowns well beyond the usual shiny, semi-disposable frock. At the same time, the design turns the bride’s clean and classic strapless neckline into a statement.

The crumb-catcher — not too fussy or hopelessly formal. But still unmistakably elegant for the bride, and a fabulous pick for the bridesmaids.

Just not both at once, m’kay?
