Peonies and Oyster Silk

by admin on January 12, 2010

On this cold, snowy day (supposedly the last of that back-to-back arctic business we’ve been getting, okay, fingers crossed), it seems appropriate to dwell on the pale variety of peonies … that is if one’s thinking about peonies at all, which I obviously am.

So in honor of the white, fluffy outdoors, let’s take a look at the fab femininity of this bloom, focusing on white while occasionally straying into neighboring territories like cream, blush and toffee, because, why not?

Peonies and oyster silk: these are the romantic silhouettes and textures that captured my fancy this week, the peony with its embarrassment of petals,  attracting so much reverence that everyone and their state nation is eager to claim it as a symbol (or just ink it next to Mom). And the oyster silk? A stand-in for Blair Waldorf at her sartorial best, and everything decadent and perfect about every la belle epoque we’ve ever seen.

Credits: ivory shrug, bouquet, bridesmaids. Vera Wangs Fall 2009, bouquet. Ring pillow, sandals. Hat, lingerie, floral wreath. Gown, hanging peonies at garden wedding, peony cake. Bouquet, beautiful baby.

Notice how peonies and the most feminine artifacts … fabric florals … seem to flow from the same ground zero of sentiment. What about that beautiful pearly shrug? Those Vera Wangs that seem to translate this particular flower in a very deliberate way? That hat; that flock of bridesmaids with pretty blooms to rock their locks?

Then, there are the little touches ranging from the subtle (those shoes) to the private (ruffly, vintage underthings). A beautiful baby, a glorious cake, perhaps a spritz of peony-splashed perfume, like Perry Ellis Blue or  Burberry Brit … the latter, which I happen to adore. Something to love for everyone.
