Celestial Style for Starry-Eyed Couples

by admin on November 18, 2008

There’s a lot of interest in celestial and star themes, thanks in part to the fanatical attraction that most of us feel for Van Gogh’s signature work, and in part due to very hip couples liking to marry in unconventional venues with lots of drama, like planetariums.

So I’ve always wanted to do a celestial board, but never quite got the kick to go there until I saw the midnight blue Dior dress in the Anne Hathaway issue of W. Wow.

C R E D I T S: 1) Silk tulle dress with sequins, Dior, W Magazine. 2) Candy buffet, Blue Haze, 3) Adler Planetarium, Whateverland, 4) Favors from Starry Night-inspired wedding, Southern Weddings Magazine, 5) Celestial watches by Van Cleef and Glashuette, 6) David Tutera interior from Critsey Rowe, 7) Toffee satin-faced gown by Lazaro, 8) Marc by Marc Jacobs shoes, Sonia Rykiel Dita shoulder bag and Morgan Frame clutch by Rafe, 9) (center, front) TBD reception room, 10) Godiva favors, Jennifer Skog, 11) Big Band, 12) cake by Fleur de Lisa

Unlike your junior prom, this is an operatic, OTT style feast with a little edginess to keep it fresh. Go for big girl glam, this is no time to be a shrinking violet. Bring out the oversized rings and the diva clutches.

Trends: lucite (clear centerpiece stands and candle holders, ice chivari chairs), sequins, sheers, metallics. The grecian goddess silhouette is 100% at home here, too.

Colors: work from the spectrum of the night sky, ranging from hazy blue to ink black with pops of antique gold.

Sophisticated lighting carries the night here, and tables should glow with the help of submerged LEDs and floating candles. Uplight pyramids of blue martinis.

By the end of the evening, your guests will stumble out the door in an otherworldly haze. Hand them sparklers so your photog can snap some phenomenal pics of you two under a blazing arch of light.
