Fashionable Hat Trick

1970s bridesmaid

Maybe when you think of hats and bridesmaids — if you think of them at all — picture this 1970s-floppy-boho style.

But did you think they could be as cute as this?

Or as these ladies?

Toooo gorgeous.

Look at this stunner.

Could they be any lovelier?

Oh, and one more thing …

The guys look pretty good too.

Loving Louboutin: The Man. The Shoes.

by admin on January 5, 2010

Where I live, the population has been on the downtick for decades, as people drift off to warmer climes.

Maybe that’s why, at the one hoity-toity anchor store in the queen bee mall, the shoe department gives every impression …
… of an Ugg bomb having gone off, instead of stirring the soul with creations like these cobalt Alexander McQueens.

It’s tragic. This store doesn’t understand that the recesses of a woman’s soul will never be filled by Uggs. Or that kind of like the Met, they have a curator’s duty to bring sublime stilettos and wondrous wedges to the masses. Really, they do.

But you know who does understand all this, and so much more? Guess. That’s right. That LOO-BOO-TAWN guy.

Barely a whisper in 2004, here’s a man who’s since inspired a manicure, a Barbie doll, and a macaron by (who else?) Ladurée, not to mention capturing the hearts and wallets of the world’s best-heeled women. Yes, even Mrs. Carrie Bradshaw-Big. Sorry, Manolo. Sorry, Jimmy Choo.

He’s a legend, not only for his affability and quick quips (”hmm, I think my shoes have been driving up the price for couture shoes in general … eh, I’m fine with that”), but for things like missing his flight back to Paris so he can sign his signature red soles for the clamoring crowds at Barney’s, Saks, Bergdorf’s.

... that lucky girl.

... that lucky girl.

Have women … brides in particular … ever been this wild to slip on a piece of “sculpture for the feet,” as Oprah raved repeatedly to millions of viewers? Doesn’t a pair of these hand-made confections — “My inspiration really comes from the showgirls,” said Louboutin — really open up a whole new dimension on top of an already glorious wedding day?

Not only does Louboutin rule the Luxury Brand Status Index yet again, he’s one of the few designers to flat turn down a diffusion line, even though H&M came a courtin’.

In short — he’s a compact, adorable fashion deity. And clearly, he’s having plenty of fun just as things are. And as a result, so are we, from top to tootsies.

You haven’t yet watched Net-a-Porter’s interview with this pharaoh of footwear? Seriously, you won’t regret paying out this five minutes of your life … except that you just might fall even harder for you-know-you by the end.

Buh-buh buh-bum. Right then. See you in line at Saks.

Something Blue

December 13, 2009

Do brides even buy Manolos anymore? Have they become a tiny island of “alternative couture”  in a sea of Louboutins? Has the halt temporary haitus of the SATC franchise consigned them to a hazy yesterday of memories? And, does it matter that this shoe has been around for a teensy while, long enough to be [...]

Winter Inspiration: Really Chill Boutonnieres

December 4, 2009
Thumbnail image for Winter Inspiration: Really Chill Boutonnieres

Not every wedding needs boutonnieres. Some go with pocket squares, some skip them. But if you want them, they can be really special.
After all, “the bout” is one of the main markers of the groom’s impending status change (notwithstanding any facebook updates at the altar). Sure, he maybe rents that tux and all, but the [...]

Fashion Influences: Plaid in Weddings

November 10, 2008
Thumbnail image for Fashion Influences: Plaid in Weddings

I love to see unexpected influences from the street show up in weddings.
Plaid, of course, comes back in every fall, with a great sense of fun. Sometimes it’s our old friend tartan cut into wild new shapes. A lot of times, the plaid has gone through the same modernization mill that brings us the new [...]

In Praise of Crumb-Catchers

Not so long ago, you’d be forgiven for thinking the bridal gown was boring — Vera Wang certainly thought so. In military lingo? The fashion equivalent of an MRE (ready-to-eat meal ration).
Thank God, the year of the bodice has brought us back from the brink. Now you see more originality and charm. Like petal necklines [...]

"Help! My Man Won’t Marry in Brown!"

They tried to make me wear a brown tuxI said, No, No, No …
“He won’t do it.” You hear the wail all over the country. Men, it seems, pose a real challenge when you consider that chocolate brown is probably the most dominant color in weddings, regardless of season.
Or maybe it’s more accurate to say [...]

Love (Them) Cuffs: It’s All in the Wrist

July 26, 2007
Thumbnail image for Love (Them) Cuffs: It’s All in the Wrist

You don’t have to look at many fall bridal magazines to notice all the wrist action. In fact, after you see couple dozen of these blushing brides with big bracelets, the bride who goes without almost starts to look like a featherless bird. Where does all this come from? Well, giant-sized jewelry (even paste will do) has fashion directors enthralled …

Maggie Sottero Rocks the Red Gowns

Red wedding gowns are cool, right? A lot of us who couldn’t actually pull the trigger and walk down the aisle in a full-on red dress really admire them.
There’s a drama to a full, elaborate bridal gown in red that no other color can match. It’s like the visual equal of “Like Water for [...]
